Celeste and Cecil welcome Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) 2017 high school student winners of the 9th annual Greenfield Peace Writing Scholarship: Jessyka Evans of Tualatin High School, Keagan Rice of The Dalles High School, and Kennah Watts of Oregon City High School.
The annual writing contest asks students from Oregon high school to submit essay on various aspects of peace making. This year the students were asked to respond to "How would you solve the public health crisis of gun violence? " More than 150 entries, including essays, poems and narrative works, from communities throughout the state were recieved.
The three winners will receive their scholarships at an awards ceremony on Friday, April 28th, 6:00-8:00 PM at the First Unitarian Church, Eliot Center in Portland. An Honorable Mention will also be awarded to Brittany Ngia of Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego. This year’s keynote speaker is Alisha Moreland-Capuia, MD. Born and raised in Northeast Portland, Dr. Moreland-Capuia is the co-founder of The Capuia Foundation, Executive Director of the OHSU Avel Gordly Center for Healing, and an Assistant Professor of Public Psychiatry at OHSU. She also serves on the Portland Development Commission and the OHSU/PSU Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue Advisory Committee.
