As school boards have garnered lots of press as a battleground for topics such as curriculum reform, racial justice, and book bans, it’s surprising more youth are not trained and asked to become school board representatives today.
KBOO reporter, Eoin Bastable recently had the opportunity to talk with Byronie McMahon and Parker Myrus, student leaders representing Portland Public Schools. These two student representatives regularly meet with the superintendent and district leaders where they weigh in on a wide variety of issues and get a rare “fly on the wall” look at how educational policies are worked out in the district.
