R. I. P. Don Manning
The incomparable Don Manning,.
long time host of "Bebop Spoken Here" on KBOO,
has passed on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.

We collectively owe a debt of gratitude to Don,
as well as KBOO managers over these many years,
for continuing the tradition of unique jazz hosts on KBOO.

It is this uniqueness, balanced by a true love and respect
for this jazz music, that, we feel, keeps our listeners coming back,
staying with us, and wanting to become members.

Nick Gefroh is hosting an on-air tribute to Don,
on his show, "Jazz Lives!", on Wednesday, September 10.
We only wish Don could hear it all "live".
Nick planned it while Don was still with us;
Don's family said he was looking forward to it.

The plan fell just one day short.

Hats off again to Rita Rega, my alternating co-host,
for her excellent interview with George Wein,
the founder of the Newport (R. I.) Jazz Festival
beginning in 1955, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival,
beginning in 1970.  Rita pulled off this potentially difficult task with aplomb.

Rita did a terriffic job of hosting the month of August.
I'm pleased to be here September 10, hosting a look at Newport (OR)'s
Oregon Coast Jazz Party, Mary Sue Tobin, Gordon Lee,
and local jazz current events, including the Jazz Calendar,
as always courtesy of the Jazz Society of Oregon.

We appreciate you.  Thank you for listening,
and for your always positive comments.
