David Earl Miller was a prisoner on death row for 34 years until he was executed on December 16th. Mary Nordkvelle and Jean Richardson are sisters who had a uniquie 25 year relationship as Death Row visitors to Miller who served more time on Death Row than he did in years he was alive when he committed his crime. Miller suffered emotional and physical abuse as a child and was traumatized and abused and he suffered from mental illness. Richardson and Nordkvelle were his steadfast friends and supporters for 25 years while he was on Death Row, exchanging letters and annual visits.
Mary Nordkvelle will join us on Prison Pipeline this week to discuss her unique experiences as a volunteer. She and her sister are residents of the United Kingdom. Years ago they saw a program on the BBC about Americans on death row in the US. That began a long journey of writing and then visiting prisoners on Death Row. Since their initial correspondence they have become regular visitors to the US, visiting prisoners on Death Row at San Quentin in California, Riverbend in Tennessee, ChowChilla Women's Death Row in California and the Texas State Penitentiary in Huntsville where the most executions in the US take place.
We will discuss their visits with people on Death Row, what led them to this unique avocation and what their experiences have taught them about people on Death Row. We will also talk about the differences between application of criminal justice in the US and the UK.
