Pionees of Tape Manipulation

On this episode of A Different Nature, who'll explore artists and pieces that best exemplify the manipulation of found sound via magnetic tape.

Tape Manipulation distinguishes itself from similar genres involving magnetic tape such as Tape Music, Musique Concrete or Electro-Acoustic Music in that it utilizes found sound and recontextualizes it, either artistically or to make a counter, ironic statement, rather than something recorded by the artist specifically for manipulation.

It's an art-form that is literally as old as the medium itself, as we'll attempt to demonstrate in this episode.

We'll hear some classic Steve Reich and his phased tape loop pieces, some early cut-and-splice pieces by minimal pianist Richard Trythall, James Tenney and others, some post consumer collage pieces by Daniel Stevens Craft, Orchid Spangiafora and some modern Dada-esque pieces by Doug Kahn and Don Joyce of Negativland.

Now we're so exposed to audio manipulation that we hardly notice that it exists.
