Drone-maker Insitu, located in towns throughout the Columbia Gorge, and now owned by Boeing, makes surveillance & targeting drones for the U.S. military. Insitu has been soliciting local support for developing a centralized campus in the Gorge. In response to Insitu’s raised profile, local concerns have begun to be voiced about the military role of Insitu's drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Guests, Theresa North and Susan Garret Crowley, have been active in raising these concerns; and Peter Lumsdaine, of The Alliance to Resist Robotic Warfare and Society, describes a conference that will be taking place at Hood River from April 16-19: "Challenging Robotic Warfare and Social Control."
