On this special KBOO program, hosts Nia Lewis & Paula Small take a closer look at the Recording, Arts, Entertainment & Literacy (REAL) Prep Charter Academy, which had an opening date of Monday, September 12, 2011.
But, the Portland Public Schools made a decision on Thursday, September 8, 2011 to suspend the school's opening, citing financial irregularities & leadership problems. The school may have its charter revoked and the founder, Erica Jayasuriya is unavailable for comment to the media.
Guests will be:
Keisha Edwards, former Education Consultant & Curriculum and Equity Specialist for REAL Prep
Matt Shelby, Public Information Officer for Portland Public Schools
Also, we'll hear perspectives from a couple of students, once enrolled at REAL Prep, whose only options were to enroll at traditional high schools.
What happened to REAL Prep that caused instability to come to light in the final weeks before the school's opening?
What happened to the over 40 students enrolled with the school? What happened to the over 100 students enrolling right before the Portland Public Schools suspended the opening?
