Back in April of 2023, a 9-year-old girl in Shasta County, California was raising a 4-H goat named Cedar when she realized that she couldn't go through with giving up her friend to be sold and slaughtered, as the program demands. The fair board, which runs the 4-H program, decided that was unacceptable and sent sheriff's deputies hundreds of miles to seize Cedar, and then had him killed almost immediately. This was despite the girl’s mother offering to pay for the animal, or work out some compromise with fair officials to spare Cedar’s life. The story made national news and the girl’s family sued the fair board and sheriff's department. On this month's Voices For the Animals, we have an update on the case and an interview with Danielle Hanosh, Executive Director of the LEAP program, which stands for Leaders for Ethics, Animals, and the Planet. This wonderful initiative is now available in 16 states including Oregon and gives kids interested in agriculture and animals a way to learn and earn college benefits without the killing.

**Just a reminder that the interview portion of this program was recorded before Cedar’s case went to court and will contain some dated information.**
