Amongst all the other depredations a Trump administration is likely to inflict on us, he threatens to roll back a half-century of Native self-determination. From declaring that he will abolish the Interior Department, which includes the Bureau of Indian Affairs and has been led under Biden, for the first time ever, by a Native American, Deb Haaland; to his promise to open up more lands to exploiting oil, gas and other energy sources, much of which is on Native lands, a Trump presidency could radically redefine the federal relationship to its indigenous Peoples, who have been striving to reclaim a real sense of nationhood since the brutal period of colonization and genocide. The contorted legacy of Federal Indian Law, based on out-dated and racist assumptions but the only thing guaranteeing what exists of Native sovereignty, is open to being ignored or worse, as happened during the Termination Era of the 1950's.
