Yesterday, October 10th, was World Mental Health Day. So it’s a fortunate coincidence our In Depth guest today is filmmaker Sandra Luckow. Sandra, along with her family, was personally affected by mental illness. And she turned that experience into one of the most moving and important films on the subject, the 2017 documentary “That Way Madness Lies”.

The film is a documentary about Sandra’s brother Duanne, also a talented filmmaker, who was diagnosed as schizophrenic when he was 46 years old. Though Sandra lives in New York City, she and Duanne grew up in the Portland area. She now returns to her hometown to celebrate Duanne’s 60th birthday, with a special showing of his films this Saturday, October 14th at the Moreland Theater.

Sandra is currently working on her next film, a documentary following the last six months in the life of writer Cai Emmons, who stricken with ALS, ended her own life last January through Oregon’s Death With Dignity program. The documentary, titled "Vanishing: A Love Story", is currently in production. You can find out more about the film, and help bring it to the screen, online at https://vanishingalovestory.com/
