On this episode of The Gap, Tammy and Althea run through some local news items on the way to reconvening STRIKETOBER baby! Importantly, Measure 110, that decriminalized drug possession was analyzed and researchers didn't find evidence connecting the decriminalization to increased calls to police. Also, Willamette Week reports that Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler will announce next week a plan to sweep homeless Portlanders off of city property, and into... mass encampments. They're calling them "campuses," if that makes you feel better about forcibly moving someone into a mass camp.
Then, we get into STRIKETOBER, looking back on this time last year, what folks in town have accomplished in the labor movement, and keeping a wary eye on the Supreme Court's docket. They're taking on a case out of Washington State that could have huge consequences for workers going on strike in the future, depending on how they rule.
For our community question, we ask our listeners, what is your third place? Sociologists define the third place as one separate from home (first place) and work/school (second place). So think cafes, bars, churches, clubs and parks. Places where there's little financial barrier to entry, you can find conversation with someone new and there's not an expectation of productivity. Thanks to all our listeners who shared their third places! Check the links below to some more reading on the subject.
