Canning, the collecting kind, is an important source of income for many people, but the locations and options for where to exchange cans and bottles shrunk when the COVID pandemic hit. The People's Depot has grown to fill that gap, providing bottle redemption centers by and for canners. In the past year, they've diverted 2.5 million cans from the waste stream. The People's Depot closed their Steel Bridge location, but their other two spots are going strong.
KBOO's Laura Smith visited one of the People's Depot bottle redemption sites to learn more about its role as a resource for the community.
