The roots of playing a guitar with a slide to mimic the human voice can be traced back to Africa. Mississippi delta blues singers used knives and glass bottlenecks to make their guitars sing and laugh and cry starting in the early 20th Century. I’ve loved slide guitar since hearing early Ry Cooder and Leo Kottke albums.
Slide Guitar 101 is a brief introduction to the early masters like Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Mississippi Fred McDowell, and acolytes Bonnie Raitt, Tom Rush, David Bromberg, and Rory Block. We’ll also hear from innovators Ellen McIlwaine and Harry Manx.
