KBOO Celebrates its 50 Years of Sound, Science and Environmental Awareness In a Unique Immersive Sound and Site Collaboration with OMSI

Tuesday October 9, 7:30PM OMSI’s Kendall Planetarium

In honor of KBOO and OMSI's long-standing commitment to education and environmental awareness, OMSI's Kendall Planetarium is teaming up for KBOO Community Radio's 50th Anniversary with a group of global sound artists and scientists.

The event, Hear and There: Audio Postcards from Earth, is a first time collaboration between a planetarium and professional recordists to immerse the audience in the rich diversity of animal sounds from around the globe. It features 5.1 discrete surround sound mixes along with the starscapes to match the day, place and time that the recordings took place.

This project celebrates KBOO's 50th Anniversary by honoring the station’s 1998 Earth Day broadcast where, for twenty-four continuous hours, there were no human voices heard on air.

For the 20th Anniversary of this broadcast, KBOO and Echo Collector Events are updating that idea with immersive surround sound recordings in OMSI’s Kendall Planetarium. Featured recordings include:

• Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

• Dzanga Elephant Bai in the Central African Republic

• Talatakely Rainforest in Madagascar

• Rocky Mountain National Park

AND sound collages created by Richard Francis, founder of KBOO's A Different Nature, from the broadcast archive of A Different Nature Collective’s award-winning 1998 Twenty-Four Hour Earth Day broadcast. Some of these artistic interpretations may never have been heard before by the public.
