Robert Hunter was the main lyricist for The Grateful Dead and its only off-stage member.  He died late in September 2019.

As a tribute to his work in the band, I've been playing all of his Grateful Dead songs, in the order the band debuted them.   I generally have not played debuts (though it's happened), but an early fairly representative version of the song.

Part 1 (October 2019) covered from mid-1967 (Alligator) to mid-1969 (Easy Wind).

Part 2 (November 2019 ) started in late 1969 (Cumberland Blues) and stopped in early 1971 (Loser).

Part 3 (March 2020) covered early 1971 (Wharf Rat) to early 1973 (They Love Each Other).

Part 4 (July 2020) ran from early 1973 (Here Come Sunshine) to mid-1975 (Help on the Way).

Part 5 (November 2020) went from mid-1975 (Franklin's Tower) through 1979 (Alabama Getaway)

 

This is the sixth and final show in this series and covers the 14 debuts of Hunter tunes between 1982 and 1993.

 

The Grateful Dead debuted no Robert Hunter songs in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1990, 1994 or 1995.

Did other bands have off-stage members? How ever rare or common it was, I'm willing to hear other songs made by or featuring off-stage members of bands (in any music genre). This would make a good subject for all of KBOO's programs.
