In Washington and Kenner, Louisiana, Congressional committee members – who couldn’t possibly know boo about oil rigs - got some vague idea of What Went Wrong. Starting with defects in cementing and in a critical safety device they learned that it came down to "a calamitous series of equipment and operational failures." In the words of Henry Waxman Dem of Beverley Hills. The BP well, drilled 18,000 feet below the seafloor, may have failed two critical pressure tests in the hours before the Big Bang. But the device we all want to know more about is the most likely culprit: The Blow-Out Preventer – something every oil rig should have. In fact if it were my oil rig I’d have a whole broomcloset full of the things. Oh, and batteries...someone forgot to bring extra batteries?
