Bill Resnick interviews PhD candidate in sociology Alex Diamond on the modern history of Colombia, including the 50 year insurrection of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), the recent peace accords, how the peace process has opened the countryside to new large scale extractive projects, ongoing displacements of rural populations, and the resurgence of violence in the face of government failure to live up to the peace accords. Diamond conducts ethnographic research about the effects of the peace process on a rural community in transition away from a cocaine-based economy. For further reading see Diamond’s articles in NACLA: Murder in Colombia’s Peace Laboratory and Will Megaprojects Destroy Colombia’s Peace Process.
