Detainees: Mentally Ill & Undocumented Immigrants
Disability Rights Oregon recently published a new report that finds individuals with mental illness held at Multnomah County Detention Center experience significant physical and mental harm. The report recommends steps that the jail should take to better meet the needs of people with severe mental illness who are locked behind its walls including:
—End solitary confinement for people with serious mental illness;
—Strengthen supports for people with mental health issues in custody;
—Create a new protocol for responding to mental health related behavior in jail; and
—Improve oversight and accountability to remedy systemic race and disability disparities, and prevent staff misconduct.
We will be joined by Sarah Radcliffe who is a Managing Attorney with Disability Rights Oregon where she oversees the Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness program to discuss the report. Her work focuses on the intersection of civil rights and mental health.
In Part 2 of the Show
President Trump and ICE continues enforcing the same inhumane and failed immigration policy of raids and family separation of the last 8 years without a pathway to legalization to the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States
We will be joined by Milenio.org to discuss the recent detentions of workers in Oregon and what we can do to fight back. Milenio facilitates the involvement of Latinos at all levels of public decision-making and politics in our state of Oregon and has helped to facilitate the recent protests at the ICE detention facilities in southwest Portland.
