Debtors’ Prisons: Past and Present
Adam Carpinelli will interview activists Daniel Hong and Michael Wilson with Strike Debt Portland and Bay Area chapters. The discussion will focus on the historical significance of debtors’ prisons and recent trends to criminalize financial obligations. Strike Debt formed in 2012 from Occupy Wall St. and is a nationwide movement of debt resisters fighting for democratic alternatives to the debt system. With stagnant wages, systemic unemployment and public service cuts, we are forced to go into debt for our basic human needs like housing, education and healthcare. Debt is a major source of power for Wall Street that keeps us isolated, ashamed, and afraid. We use direct action, research, education, and the arts to challenge oppressive, coercive and illegitimate debt while creating alternatives.
