KBOO Received an Oregon Humanities Foundation Grant to create podcasts around criminalization

KBOO has received a grant for the Oregon Humainites to create a podcast with 2 community groups that will explore criminalization, the process by which behaviors and individuals are transformed into crime and criminals, in our communities. Two small cohorts of people who often experience criminalization will each create a podcast featuring interviews, information, and analysis about how their communities are criminalized (currently or historically), the effects of criminalization, and repercussions of this dynamic for broader society.

Each podcast will explore, from different perspectives, questions of how our communities define “crime” and “criminals”, what are the effects of labeling communities as “criminal” or high crime, and how criminality affects our humanity and relationships. Does criminalizing behavior, attitudes, attributes, or appearances build the kind of communities that we want? What are the social and economic costs of criminalization? These podcasts will start a conversation asking, “is criminalization the answer to our social struggles?”

We literally will be starting conversations as we have public listening events and discussions which will focus on bringing together a diverse group of people to listen to the podcasts and engage with the issues addressed, while adding to the dialogue through their own experiences.

Stay tuned to our RFP for community groups to be involved. We thank Oregon Humanities for their funding and faith in us, and to Jessy Damon, the organizer for KBOO for this exciting project.
