Gar Alperovitz on democratizing wealth, building a community-sustaining econonomy from the ground up
The dominance of corporate capitalism and the influence of money on politics have led to growing inequality, erosion of civil liberties, inadequate health care, environmental decline and the list goes on. Can traditional reform politics address these problems or is the system broken? Broken, according to political economist Gar Alperovitz, but that doesn't mean the game's over. In his recently published What Then Can We Do? Straight Talk About the Next the American Revolution Alperovitz offers a 'checkerboard' of hope -- real alternatives that are already happening to build community-sustaining economies and to democratize wealth from the ground up. These include but are not limited to worker owned firms, municipal ownership of businesses, and even nationalization of strategic institutions.
