Sonya Atalay on Community-Based Archeology.
This Friday Dr. Atalay, Assistant Professor in Public Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Ameherst talks about the findings of her new book Community-Based Archeology, Research with, by and for Indigenous and Local Communities. She will highlight the power of decolonizing research methods in the field of archeology and empowering both archeologists and communities though this process. She will share examples from her own research with Native communities in the US and communities in Turkey.
Dr. Atalay is Ojibwe. Her research focus is in indigenous anthropology, and she examines anthropology and archaeology's effects and impacts on native and local communities. She is an active researcher, on the editorial board of American Antiquity,and editor of the Archaeology and Indigenous Peoples series sponsored by the World Archaeological Congress. In 2009, she was appointed by the United States Secretary of the Interior to the national committee overseeing compliance of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) with reporting duties to the United States Congress.
