The ultimate conclusion to "act locally" is the secession of the People's Republic of Cascadia. Why? What would this mean? What sections of the planet would it cover? Will the old United States of America miss us? What about the people who were really here first? Can you be a bioregionalist without being a secessionist?
We talk with local Cascadia activists Alexander Baretich, Jason Thomas and Mario Haro live in studio about their work to free our beloved corner of the world, from what many consider the tyranny of an old order of annexation.
Alexander Baretich is native Portlander and the designer of the Cascadian flag. He has a degree in Islamic and Eastern European history and degree in political geography. He has taught a variety of subjects such as mythology, geopolitics, cultural geography, nationalism and other subjects both in Oregon and in Europe. He is currently nonemployed, but teaches a free class called Memetic Cascadia. He has been called both a guerrilla teacher and a revolutionary artist.
Jason Thomas is a native Portlander, a freelance artist and amateur Portland historian with a background in marine biology. He has been involved in efforts to push for marine reserves off of our coastal region and community transparency demands from agencies involved in testing, using, or polluting our waters for gain with no concern to the effects. He has a general concern for the region, his community, his home.
Mario Haro is a father, revolutionary chef, farm worker, citizen journalist. He helped form CAW: Cascadians Against War; and you can find him on twitter @PDXZapatista.
