The Music of Otomo Yoshihide

On this week's A Different Nature, we'll look at the wide-ranging discography of Japanese musician, composer and musical deconstructivist Otomo Yoshihide.

Otomo Yoshihide (born August 1, 1959 in Yokohama, Japan) is a Japanese experimental musician, turntablist and guitarist. He played in rock bands while at college, but turned to improvisation after discovering free jazz and free improvisation musicians like the guitarist Derek Bailey, the saxophonist Kaoru Abe and guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi (from whom he had lessons)... (Discogs)

Otomo's musical oeuvre is wide-ranging; from relatively straightforward Jazz interpretations and improvisations, to squealing, sludgy guitar feedback to turntable and hard disc manipulations that would challenge the eardrums of the most hardy of Noise Music enthusiasts.

While we can't cover the length and breadth of his output in totality in two hours (Otomo's also guested on more albums and projects than many can list), we can drop the needle and perhaps scratch the surface for the brave and curious Different Nature listener.
