Audio from rally and die-in in downtown Portland in opposition to Arctic oil drilling
President Obama is in Alaska today for a meeting with world leaders about climate change in the Arctic.
He was met by hundreds of protesters challenging his decision to allow Shell Oil to drill in the Arctic – a move they say will greatly increase climate change, and is likely to result in difficult-to-access oil spills.
In Portland, a rally and march was held mid-day today in solidarity with the Alaskan activists.
The group Shell No! organized the event, which included a funeral procession and die-in for the Arctic at the federal building in downtown Portland.
According to the protest organizers, Arctic drilling which will wreak havoc on the fragile ecosystems of the Arctic and bring us ever closer to surpassing the 2 degree threshold that scientists have warned will cause irreversible climate catastrophe and massive loss of life.
Here are some excerpts from the rally, recorded by KBOO’s Paul Roland.
The voices you heard included Graham Clumpner with Iraq Veterans Against the War, Carrie with Idle No More, and local climate activist Daphne Wysham
The organizers of today’s action, the Shellno Action Council, has made four demands of the Obama administration.
The group demands A rapid transition to renewable energy, the end of exploratory drilling in the Arctic, the Protection of indigenous peoples’ rights and communities, and Binding agreements at the 2015 U.N. Climate Change Conference that are on par with what science has shown is necessary for a livable future.
