Our topic for this evening is a look at a wildly popular crocheting club that has taken root inside a male correctional facility. The last place you would expect a thriving crochet program to be is in a medium security prison. Yet, at the Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem, such a program exists. The crochet program was designed as a service project for incarcerated men to give back to the community.
The guests are Lyle Murphy. Lyle is about to receive a Master’s Degree in Folklore Studies from the University of Oregon in Eugene. He has been researching the Crochet Program at the OSCI for his thesis project. We are also joined in the studio tonight by James, who was released from the OSCI two weeks ago. While incarcerated, James participated in the Crocheting Club.
