Yousef Mayel
I moved to Portland in August of last year, 2022, from Rialto, California - a city on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The heat, smog and traffic in and around Los Angeles finally got to me. I chose to move to Portland because of its progressive atmosphere, abundance of public transportation and of course, cooler weather. After settling down in Portland and working full time, I wanted to get involved in the community. My former housemate Charles, whom I consider a friend now, informed me about KBOO. From what I heard, It seemed like a perfect opportunity to network and learn about the radio industry.
After reading about the history, culture and vision of KBOO, I was hooked. I want to be involved. So far, I have volunteered my time by helping out with tabling activities during the Waterfront Blues Festival and the Jazz Fest at Cathedral Park. I am also currently working with the Development Committee to set up an event, possibly a block party, to celebrate KBOO’s 50th anniversary. There are other upcoming tabling opportunities for which I will most likely volunteer. I usually work during the weekdays but on the weekends, I am happy to volunteer my time. I am a graduate of the University of California, Irvine- B.A. Sociology. My professional work experience, after college, has been mostly in the social services and education sector. I have experience teaching, tutoring, collecting data and role playing as a background actor during training exercises. Of all of my past jobs, I enjoyed role playing most because it gave me a chance to act, which is one of my hobbies. Hopefully, my experience as a professional role player/ background actor can be utilized by KBOO.
My skills, education and work experience will add to the development of KBOO as a source of information and entertainment. My character and attitude will bring calm and laughter to the team. My dedication to the well being of society will ensure that KBOO continues to have a positive impact on the community, the nation and the world.
