Please join us on Monday, June 13th at 6:30 pm for Prison Pipeline on KBOO Community Radio as we talk with Lucas Hirsty, a Deputy Public Defender and producer of the podcast "Members of the Jury".  We will be discussing the benefits of access to free phone calls and the positive impact it can have on the mental health and well-being of adults in custody, and specifically the benefit that it can have on people who are pretrial being detained in county facilities.  As it stands it is all too common across the country for adults in custody to be forced to pay up to $10 for a 15-minute phone call to a loved one.  For adults in custody who are detained pretrial because they cannot afford bail, it is all too likely that they cannot afford a phone call as well.  This means that even if a person is innocent and awaiting trial if they do not have the financial means their communication with the outside world is almost completely cut off.  We will talk about popular campaigns around the country trying to exploit AICs through exorbitant phone fees and what you can do to fight back in your own community.

Prison Pipeline is a radio program dedicated to educating the public about the Oregon criminal justice system. Our goal is to present a unique understanding of the criminal justice system, address the root causes of crime, and challenge the status quo. We seek to promote awareness and activism in order to foster a safe, healthy, and just society. Tune in every Monday at 6:30 P.M. to hear our hosts Karen James, Adam Carpinelli,  Emma Lugo, and Doug McVay explore the Oregon justice system with a variety of guests.
