Terrell Kyreem Johnson was a 24 year old from Portland, Oregon. On May 10, 2017, he was at a MAX light rail station in SE Portland threatening people with a utility knife. Witnesses say he was clearly demonstrating signs of mental illness and distress. The Portland Police were called. Officer Samson Ajir shot Terrell Johnson multiple times killing him. The Multnomah County grand jury found the use of force justified, but after an independent study of the shooting found that a police bureau policy was violated, a lawsuit resulted in a $600,000 settlement in the officer’s fatal shooting of Terrell Johnson. Host Karen James speaks with Juan Chavez, civil rights attorney with Oregon Justice Resource Center, who represented Terrell’s mother Alicia Johnson in the case.
