Yesterday the Senate voted on Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski’s Resolution of Disapproval which would stop the Environmental Protection Agency’s plans to regulate greenhouse gases starting next year. Oregon is one of the states that sued the EPA for not being tough enough on tailpipe emissions standards. Murkowski’s pro-energy amendment went down in flames, but the money and power that prompted it are still kicking. How would the Kerry Lieberman bill compromise the rights of individual states to set their own environmental standards? Sara Saylor with EarthJustice says Murkowski’s ill-timed adventure in the politics of oil isn’t surprising – what is surprising was the timing: the same day the oil spill numbers were revised upward…way upward.
