NorthernStar goes broke, whales go mad, and everybody goes Gaia with Toby Hemenway...

It’s light years beyond gardening:  It’s a form of farming that stretches from inner city apartment windowsills to remote off-the-grid homesteads.  Permaculture is perhaps the most misunderstood green concept out there.  In essence, permaculture is about ‘pattern literacy’.  My guest today practices permaculture, teaches permaculture and has written about permaculture as a gateway for the average gardener into another way of building community based on understanding the natural world.  Toby Hemenway wrote ‘Gaia’s Garden’ and changed the way many people integrate internals, externals and edges into Community.

Oregon State University marine researchers plan a dubious experiment on whales early next year during gray whale migrations. The idea is to discover whether low-power acoustic devices can prevent whales from approaching wave-energy platforms and cables that might one day occupy waters off Oregon and elsewhere.  So we are going to use sound to move animals out of harm's way.   Human-generated harm, that is.  The sounds would be used to scare stray whales away from their natural habitat because some sort of man-made madhouse presents the danger of stranding.  Or how about this:  If we didn’t bandjaxed the cetacean nation we wouldn’t need to protect whales from their own habitat environment.
