This Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of a small Texas municipality that is trying to overturn a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
The provision requires certain jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination to ask the federal government for permission before changing their voting laws.
According to Laughlin McDonald, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union that is intervening in the case, this is not the first time that a southern district has challenged the provision
