KBOO COMMUNITY CALENDAR TUESDAY June 16 2009 This is the community calendar for Tuesday June 16 2009 The National Lawyers Guild, the ACLU of Oregon and the the Oregon Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society are sponsoring an evening seminar entitled "Civil Liberties Under the Obama Administration: Are We Still at Risk?" at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. The event is free and will be held at the Portland State University Urban Center's Second Floor Gallery, 506 SW Mill. The seminar will cover continuing issues of race, preventive detention, the Obama administration's plans for Guantanamo detainees, and ethnic and religious profiling. Speakers will include Tom Nelson and Ashlee Albies, lawyers who are litigating a challenge to the NSA warrantless wiretapping program; Steven Wax, Federal Public Defender, who has represented a number of Guantanamo detainees; David Fidanque, Executive Director of the ACLU of Oregon; Steven Wilker, an ACLU cooperating attorney; and JoAnn Bowman, Director of Oregon Action. Steve Novick will moderate. Cosponsors include the Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group and Willamette Week. The Women Build Committee works on all aspects of the build which includes the planning process, recruiting and managing volunteers, organizing events, and raising money. Portland Central America Solidarity Committee meets Wednesday June 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 311 N Ivy St in Portland. PCASC is a grassroots organization working for international solidarity and immigrant rights.
