On this edition of Free Culture Radio we’re going to look at state level efforts to enhance public health, reduce the harms associated with drug use, and support recovery.

On Tuesday, January 14, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing entitled “A Public Health Emergency: State Efforts to Curb the Opioid Crisis.”

The witnesses who testified were:

Jennifer Smith. Ms. Smith is Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs;

Monica Bharel, MD, MPH. Doctor Bharel is the Commissioner of Public Health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health;

Christina Mullins. Ms. Mullins is Commissioner of the Bureau for Behavioral Health at the state of West Virginia’s Department of Health and Human Resources;

Kody Kinsley. Mr. Kinsley is the Deputy Secretary for Behavioral Health and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities at the State of North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services.

And Nicole Alexander-Scott, MD, MPH. Doctor Alexander-Scott is the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.
