For more than 14 years, southern Oregon communities have been fighting a proposal to build a 229-mile Pacific Connector fracked gas pipeline that would cross more than 400 rivers and streams on its way across Southern Oregon and the Jordan Cove LNG export terminal at the Port of Coos Bay. If approved, the pipeline and terminal would be the largest climate polluter in the state. Pipeline and terminal construction would threaten Oregon rivers, streams and the Coos Bay estuary.
On December 6th, 2018 the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) opened a 60-day public comment period for an important permit known as the “Removal-Fill Permit.” DSL is one of several state agencies that can shut down the Jordan Cove LNG project by denying necessary ‘removal-fill’ permits needed for dredging related to the pipeline and terminal. For the past week, people across the state have been presenting comments on Jordan Cove's permit application at public hearings in Klamath, Jackson, Douglas and Coos counties. On January 15 the final hearing will be held in Salem.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Allie Rosenbluth, one of the organizers fighting Jordan Cove. Allie Rosenbluth is the Campaigns Director at Rogue Climate, a grassroots organization based in Medford with a mission to empower southern Oregon communities most impacted by climate change, including low-income, rural, youth, and communities of color, to win climate justice by organizing for clean energy, sustainable jobs, and a healthy environment. Allie organizes with impacted community members across the region to stop the proposed Pacific Connector fracked gas pipeline & Jordan Cove LNG export terminal while building a strong grassroots movement for climate justice in rural Oregon. This December Allie also attended the UN Climate Talks in Poland as a SustainUS Youth Delegate, where she disrupted the US panel promoting fossil fuels with youth and frontline communities from across the country.
