Please join us this Tuesday at 6pm on Transpositive PDX on KBOO Community Radio as we talk with Ryan Newby of the Victim Rights Law Center. According to the 2015 US Trans Survey, people identifying as trans masculine or afab non-binary report having been sexually assaulted at rates of nearly double the cis female community, at an alarming 1 in 2 of persons as compared with 1 in 4 of the cis female community. In addition to these startling and completely unacceptable statistics, the reality is even worse when we look at it through an intersectional lense and consider the real life experiences of trans masculine people of color and trans women of color. Sexual assault is a very real and terrifying experience, and although the #metoo movement has brought this to light in new ways, people of color and trans and non binary people are still largely invisible in this heteronormative narrative.
According to their website, "The Victim Rights Law Center provides free, comprehensive legal services for sexual assault victims with legal issues in Massachusetts and Oregon in the areas of privacy, safety, housing, education, employment, immigration, LGBTQ-specific issues, criminal justice advocacy, and financial stability. What we learn from representing individual survivors is harnessed to train thousands of advocates, attorneys, campus administrators, medical professionals, law enforcement, military personnel, and other professionals throughout the United States and U.S. Territories annually to improve the response to sexual violence. Anyone can be a victim of sexual violence, and we are proud to serve survivors of all gender identities, sexual orientations, races, and religions in Massachusetts and Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties, Oregon."
Ryan Newby, Esq. is a staff attorney with the VRLC's Portland Office. Prior to joining the VRLC, he practiced as a legal aid attorney and a juvenile dependency attorney, and served as the law clerk to the Hon. Maureen McKnight at the Multnomah County Circuit Court. Ryan is a graduate of Smith College and University of California Hastings College of the Law. In 2015, the Oregon State Bar Juvenile Section awarded Ryan the New Practitioner Award, and he was honored by the National LGBT Bar Association as one of 2017's 40 Best LGBT Attorneys under 40. Ryan is passionate about expanding access to justice for survivors and transgender Oregonians. In his free time, Ryan enjoys travel, reading, and spending time with his husband and family.
Transpositive is a monthly program in Portland exploring themes important to those who identify as Transgender, Gender Non Binary and Gender Non-Conforming. Transpositive tries to connect listeners with the ongoing activist, arts, culture, and dialogue happening in Portland and beyond.
