Transpositive PDX explores the vibrant activism in Portland reflecting the Transgender communities

How does it feel to be transgender and to belong to a faith tradition that may or may not accept your identity?  How do transgender people with a faith tradition work with or even remake their experience and understanding of their tradition in order to find meaning in it?  How do transgender people transform their tradition so that it not only fits their identity, but also contributes to the broader tradition even reshaping how our cisgender allies come to understand their tradition? Please join us on this special May Day broadcast as we continue the second in our two part series exploring the intersection of faith traditions and transgender identities.  That is Tuesday, May 1st at 6pm on Transpositive PDX on KBOO Community Radio at 90.7 FM in Portland, 91.9 FM Hood River and 104.3 FM Corvallis/Albany and streaming online at kboo.fm.

Joining us in the conversation we will be joined with the fabulous Transpositive PDX collective as well as Davina Bookbinder, Rabbinic Intern at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Portland and a proud transwoman. She believes that the Torah mandates us to pursue justice in all its forms and that the only way we can succeed is by creating a united trans-denominational Jewish community. Davina best describes herself as a “denominational traveler.”  As a Jewish leader, Davina hopes to bring together people of all faiths and traditions as a united global community to fulfill the statement in Micah: to do justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

We will also be joined by Sheila Mengert, author of Transsexualism and Its Discontents.  Sheila Mengert is the author of several books and articles on the subjects of law, gender and religion.  A practicing Catholic, She is the author of An Alternate View on Catholic Moral Theology and Transsexualism.  Sheila has been an out and proud transgender woman since the early 1990s.

Also joining us in studio will be Theresa Scott describes herself as a libertarian-leaning conservative politically, a conservative Christian theologically, and a transsexual who transitioned almost five years ago.

Theresa was a photojournalist in the US Army in the 1970s, then worked for almost four decades in the electronics industry, and now works as a marketing manager, photographer, videographer, writer, editor, and internet content creator.
Theresa earned a BA in Business and an MBA from George Fox University. Theresa has written at length on her website about her experience as a transsexual.
