Dr. Strangelove

In 2016 while on the campaign trail, then-candidate Donald Trump alarmed leaders throughout the world when he said during a Town Hall, that there are several scenarios in which nuclear weapons should be employed by the U.S., including against ISIS. "Somebody hits us within ISIS, you wouldn't fight back with a nuke? Then why are we making them? Why do we make them?"

A few weeks ago the government announced this year's Nuclear Posture Review, which breaks with longstanding international and bipartisan consensus that nuclear-armed nations should work to reduce and eliminate their nuclear arsenals. The 2018 Nuclear Posture Review calls for “more usable” nuclear weapons and expands the list of scenarios in which we might actually use nuclear weapons.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Kevin Martin, President of Peace Action, about who let Dr. Strangelove return to guide American nuclear weapons policy.

Kevin Martin is President of Peace Action and the Peace Action Education Fund. Kevin’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Nation, Los Angeles Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Village Voice, The Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, The Progressive, Z magazine and many other publications.
