On this episode of Political Perspectives, producer Carlos Chavez joins Deborah Arthur and her fall term Metamorphosis Capstone class at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility.
This course provides an opportunity for a small group of students from PSU and a small group of students currently incarcerated at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility (MYCF) to work together in a structured peer and collaborative learning environment. Each week, the class met at MYCF in Woodburn. Students (both outside PSU and inside students) examined their own perceptions about social justice and social change, and examined and developed their perceptions of their own role as agents of change.
This fall, the course content focused primarily on where and how we live. What role does housing play in the lives of individuals, families and communities? How have laws and regulations played a role in segregated communities? How does where and how we live shape who we become? The course also incorporated a powerful story exchange narrative titled, Narrative 4. Narrative 4's mission is to build a community of empathic global citizens who improve the world through the exchange of personal narratives. During the capstone term, Instructor Deborah Arthur provides this tool as a means to acheive what is called radical empathy, through exchanging meaning personal stories in the classroom.
