Northwest Innovation Works, a company controlled by the Chinese government, seeks to take advantage of Washington State’s cheap natural gas, water, and electricity to manufacture methanol for export to China. The proposal would include a 90-acre methanol refinery at the Port of Kalama, a massive new dock and dredging in the lower Columbia River, and a 3 mile long pipeline through a pioneer cemetery and residential properties in Cowlitz County. If built, Kalama's small town charm and tightly-knit community would be transformed into another industrialized spigot for the export of fossil fuels.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Jasmine Zimmer-Stucky, Senior Organizer with Columbia Riverkeeper, who is working closely with dozens of community members in Kalama who are concerned about this proposed methanol refinery on the Columbia River.
