The atomic bomb in modern composition.
“...(we) could never have imagined such an enormous abyss between the humanity of the inventor and the inhumanity of the invention.”
- Jeremy Denk
Monday, August 22, 8:00 – 10:00 pm.
A few composers have used the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and even the “Trinity” atomic tests at Alamagordo as subject matter. Music this evening includes “Megaton” by Gordon Mumma, “Pika-Don” (Japanese for “Flash/Boom”) by James Tenney, “Dr. Atomic” by John Adams, and the infamous “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima” by Krzysztof Penderecki. Also some blessed relief in the form of acoustic shakuhachi music from Japan. Later in the show: Israeli composer Chaya Czernowin will be featured.
