Ben Johnston's Just Intonation

Another 90th birthday special featuring composer Ben Johnston.  Johnston was at one time an apprentice to Harry Partch, and was one of the first to develop a system of microtonal notation for conventional instruments.  Microtonal, or “Just Intonation,” may use dozens of harmonics within the traditional 12-tone octave, creating smaller, but more natural sounds.  We will play a couple of string quartets, a Chinese poem by Li Po, microtonal piano music, the Sonata for Snare Drum, and other guitar, clarinet, and chamber pieces. If time permits, music by Rebecca Saunders, Robert Erickson, and Lou Harrison.
