she lived for love...
Wow. We have to say this took us by surprise. While we acknowledge impermanence- that life is not promised; the thing that saddens us the most about this is that Ms. Natalie Cole was very much a survivor. She was extremely open about her vulnerabilities and her mistakes in ways that many are afraid to do. She looked at her life as a consistent journey.
One day, some years ago (walking in the rain after work) we found her book, Angel On My Shoulder, in the street. Like many of the other artists we grew up with (and still listen to) we expected it to be similar to the typical celebrity (ghost)-written, gossip-ridden tabloid. Instead, we were greeted with a conversational narrative about a woman's journey of constant reinvention and (again), vulnerability.
Artistically, similar to Janet Jackson Ms Cole acknowledged/appreciated her familial connections, yet simultaneously worked to be free from it. Ms. Cole worked from getting as far away from those roots as possible (thus gaining success with songs like 'This Will Be' and 'Miss You Like Crazy'), eventually embracing it all (through projects such as 'Unforgettable'). Just as she was known for her R&B and dance tracks, she was similarly loved for her jazz phrasings... as well as her interpretations of classics en Español.
We will be taking a journey this evening with all of you, honoring the life and works of Ms. Cole, as the ancestors are welcoming her into her new home.
