Ending Indefinite Solitary Confinement
Karen James interviews Marie Levin from Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity Coalition and California Families Against Solitary Confinement. Marie Levin’s brother, Sitawa Nantambu Jamaa, was one of the main representatives of the Pelican Bay Prison strikes to protest the cruel, inhumane and tortuous conditions in California’s Security Housing Units (SHU). Sitawa Nantambu Jamaa, who spent over 30 years in the SHU, was also one of the plaintiffs in the 2012 class action filed against California’s governor. In September 2015 a settlement was reached in this case that transformed California’s use of solitary confinement.
