Dab Steadman talks with Gayle Hunt, founder of the Central Oregon Wild Horse Coalition, about the raging battle between animal advocates and ranchers who pressure government agencies to remove wild horses from public lands.
The purpose of Gayle's organization is to fill the existing void in wild horse management by providing a number of services, including: making accurate inventories of wild horses in central Oregon; purchasing safe handling equipment to facilitate round-ups and adoptions; hosting adoption & training clinics as well as educating school groups about the proper care of horses. The coalition also provides capture services and interim care for rescued horses.
The issue of whether these horses are feral or wild is examined. The methods and problems with the Round-ups and the post-round-up adoption system are also discussed. Ms. Hunt then shares several suggestions for improvements to ensure that there will continue to be a viable population of wild horses in Oregon.
