From the mind of an artist...
Our introduction to Judith Hill came through our teacher, Michael Jackson, similar to many others. After many years of songwriting and performing with others, she gained international prominence after her appearance in 'This Is It', Michael's final living documentation as an artist. After watching interviews with her (as well as watching her appearance in the cinematic love poem to background vocalists, '20 Feet From Stardom'), it made sense to us why she was chosen to be a part of the experience. part of our love for Michael as a teacher is rooted in our being inspired by his drive to create the best art he can, and honoring that journey.
As we all know, the 'This Is It' London residency/tour never materialized, and Judith Hill used that experience to add to the journey she is currently on. This was a journey which led her to work with artists such as Stevie Wonder, and currently, Prince Rogers Nelson. Her ability to work with such artists who are perfectionists is a testament to her humility, her diversity of musical knowledge (she has composed a symphony, and has a degree in music composition from Biola University), and her drive to, like teacher Michael, create the best art she can; art that creates a delicate balance between social commentary, spirituality and fun. This balance is utilized in her debut album, Back In Time.
Judith Hill will be performing at the Alberta Rose Theater (in Portland) on the 14th of December, and we are pleased to bring you this conversation... from the mind of an artist.
