BP's past and present crimes against the environment with Pro Publica's Abrahm Lustgarten

BP'S CHRONIC CRIME'S AGAINST THE ENVIRONMENT

When the Obama administration temporarily banned BP from federal contracts last November, it pointed to BP's "lack of business integrity" and conduct relating to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill. But BP has a long history of non-compliance with federal regulation, not to mention outright criminal behavior. The company has been criminally convicted in four previous cases— including a 2005 explosion in Texas that killed 15 workers — and the EPA has been considering broader debarment proceedings against the company since at least 2005. On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with reporter Abrahm Lustgarten who has been following BP's past and present crimes against the environment for Pro Publica.

Abrahm Lustgarten writes about energy, water, climate change and anything else having to do with the environment. Before coming to ProPublica in 2008, he was a staff writer and contributor for Fortune, and has written for Wired, Salon, Esquire, the Washington Post and the New York Times. At ProPublica, his investigation into fracking for natural gas was recognized with the George Polk award for environmental reporting, a National Press Foundation award for best energy writing, a Sigma Delta Chi award and was a finalist for Harvard's Goldsmith Prize. His reporting on BP and the Deepwater Horizon tragedy was nominated for an Emmy.
