Why megadams are false solution to our energy needs with Juan Pablo Orrego.

ENERGY: Overdevelopment and the Delusion of Endless Growth, Part 5 - River Killers: The False Solution of Megadams

During spring pledge drive, Locus Focus is continuing a series of programs inspired by a new book from the Foundation for Deep Ecology and the Post-Carbon InstituteENERGY: Overdevelopment and the Delusion of Endless GrowthENERGY takes an unflinching look at the systems that support our insatiable thirst for more power along with their unintended consequences. From oil spills, nuclear accidents and mountaintop-removal coal mining, to natural gas "fracking" and renewables, ENERGY illustrates that every source of energy has costs. On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Chilean conservationist Juan Pablo Orrego about the high costs of huge megadams to individuals, communities and ecosystems. We'll discuss why destroying wild rivers with large dams in order to generate electricity is one of the clearer examples of a false solution to humanity's "need" for energy.

Juan Pablo Orrego is one of Chile's foremost conservationists and founder of director of Ecosistemas. He is presently helping lead an international coalition of conservationists fighting a megadams scheme that would destroy wild rivers in Chilean Patagonia.
