A year ago Texas Activists with Tar Sands Blockade locked themselves to equipment being used to build the Keystone XL pipeline, near Nacogdoches, Texas. A year later the battle over the pipeline is still raging but we hear less about the dramatic actions that made headlines last year. On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Nation contributing writer and climate activist Wen Stephenson about how the struggle against the Tar Sands continues, as activists in Texas connect the fight against the Keystone pipeline with the struggle for environmental justice.
Contributing writer Wen Stephenson is an independent journalist and climate activist, at work on a book about the climate-justice movement. He helped launch the grassroots network 350 Massachusetts and serves on the board of Better Future Project, a nonprofit in Cambridge, MA, dedicated to building the climate movement. A former editor at The Atlantic and The Boston Globe, he was most recently the senior producer of NPR's On Point. He has written about climate, culture and politics for The Boston Phoenix, Grist, Slate, The New York Times, and the Globe. His recent article "The Grassroots Battle Against Big Oil" in appeared in the October 8, 2013 edition of the Nation magazine.
