Mike Rose on his book, "BACK TO SCHOOL: Why Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Education"
Host Lisa Loving speaks with Mike Rose, who has made a career of championing the academic potential of the poor and underprivileged. They will discuss his latest book, BACK TO SCHOOL: Why Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Education.
Recently Harvard University, the wealthiest university in the country with a 36 billion endowment, received a whopping $400 million gift for their School of Engineering and Applied Sciences from hedge fund mogul, John A. Paulson. Last September Harvard’s School of Public Health received a $350 million gift from businessman Gerald Chan. In BACK TO SCHOOL Mike Rose reminds us that our nation’s economic and civic future rests heavily on the health of the institutions that serve everyday people—not just the top 20 universities in U.S. News & World Report.
Rose would ask whether our society would be better served if that three-quarters of a billion dollars went to the schools that educate the vast citizenry and workforce of tomorrow, from first-responders to nurses, teachers, and technicians. Imagine what that money would do for the country’s community colleges, occupational centers, and adult educational programs, institutions that give millions of Americans a shot at reaching their aspirations. How can we provide these students the support services and financial aid they need to prepare them for viable occupations while also introducing them to the power of the arts and sciences? This kind of education for all, Mike Rose tells us, should be the paramount goal of a healthy democratic society.
Mike Rose has written 12 books on education, language and literacy, and cognition, including Lives on the Boundary: the Struggles and Achievements of America’s Educationally Underprepared; Possible Lives: the Promise of Public Education in America; The Mind at Work: Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker; and Why School? Reclaiming Education for All of Us.
Rose has received numerous awards and honors for his work in education including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Grawemeyer Award in Education, and the Commonwealth Club of California Award for Literary Excellence in Nonfiction. He has been honored by the Spencer Foundation, the American Educational Research Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Modern Language Association, and was recently elected to the National Academy of Education.
